NECK-INSIDER

I Only Ordered It Because I Could Send It Back.

There are nine things in my hall closet that were supposed to fix my neck.

I am 44. I do the books for three small companies, from my kitchen table, on two laptop screens, since the office went hybrid five years ago. The pain started that same month and it has never once left.

I did not believe the tenth thing either. I ordered it because of the refund policy, not because of the product.

Note: Read this before you buy your tenth thing.

Bought Nine Things First

1. The Shelf I Do Not Like Opening

A massage gun, a posture corrector and other recovery gadgets on a desk

Everything on this list did something for about two days.

  • Contoured cervical pillow$199
  • Massage gun, used four times$149
  • Two orthopedic pillows$118
  • Neck hammock, 5-star reviews$39
  • TENS unit$180
  • Heated wrap$54
  • Posture corrector$35
  • Foam roller$28
  • Shiatsu massager for the shoulders$62
  • Nine things, five years$864

Every one of them was back in the closet inside a month. After a while you stop blaming the products and start quietly blaming yourself. I decided I was just someone who buys things and does not stick with them.

2. The Bump at the Base of My Neck Is Not Fat

Two side views of a neck: one with the natural curve, one straightened out

If you have ever felt the raised spot where your neck meets your shoulders and then searched what it is, you probably frightened yourself. I did.

Here is what a physio told me, and I wish it had been the first thing I read.

On almost everybody, the bone at the bottom of the neck sticks out. It is called C7 and you can feel it on a toddler. What changes with years at a screen is what builds up around it: the muscle and soft tissue that thickens when your head sits forward of your spine, hour after hour, holding eleven pounds out in front of where it belongs.

It is not always that, and this part matters. If it appeared quickly, feels soft, or arrived alongside weight changes around your face and middle, that is a different thing entirely and it belongs in a doctor's office, not on a landing page. No pillow on earth touches that.

Mine was not that. Mine came on over five years of a kitchen table and two laptops, and what I could actually do something about was the part that was tension and position.

3. Eleven Pounds, Held Out in Front

Spine with the seven neck vertebrae C1 to C7 highlightedC1 to C7: the seven bones of your neck

Your head weighs about eleven pounds. Balanced straight over your spine, seven small bones carry it and you never notice.

Move it forward two inches to read a screen and the load on the base of your neck multiplies. Not because anything is damaged. Because of leverage.

So four small muscles under the skull switch on to hold it there. And then they never switch off, because you never sit back.

That is why it came back by breakfast every single time. I was treating a muscle that was working, not a muscle that was injured.

4. Everything I Bought Aimed Somewhere Else

Deep neck stabilizers, shut down versus rebuilt

Look at the shelf again with that in mind.

The massage gun cannot reach under the skull, and I could not hold it there anyway. The heated wrap warmed the surface and the tension came straight back. The posture corrector pulled my shoulders while my head stayed exactly where it was. The $199 pillow held my head up beautifully. It never took the weight off.

Nine purchases, and not one of them did the only thing that needed doing: unload the neck and let those muscles stop working.

5. What Actually Has to Happen

Figure lying on the Thera Pillow, the neck resting in a gentle curve over the cradle

Three things at the same time, in the same fifteen minutes.

Heat that goes deeper than a pack on the skin, so the tissue actually softens. A gentle 26 degree lift that takes the weight of your head off the bottom of your neck instead of propping it up. And targeted vibration right under the skull, on the spot your thumb keeps finding on its own.

Not a stretch you have to remember. A shape you lie on. Which, for someone with a closet full of things she did not keep up, turned out to be the entire point.

6. Fifteen Minutes, and I Do Nothing

This is the whole routine, and the reason it survived where nine other things did not.

  1. Lie down. Couch or bed. Slide it under your neck so the cradle sits at the base of your skull, on the spot you always press.
  2. Hold the button for five seconds. That is the Auto setting. Heat, vibration and the gentle lift all start together. You are not setting three things.
  3. Let it run. It switches itself off. I have never once had to remember to stop.

Charge it for two hours and you are good for the week. No cords, no appointment, nothing to keep up.

7. Night One, Week One, Week Four

Sleeping through, morning light through the blinds

Night one. It feels strange. That is the traction, and it is meant to. My shoulders dropped before the fifteen minutes were up and I still told my husband I would probably be sending it back.

Week one. The tightness at the back of my head went first, before anything else. Apparently most people say the same.

Week four. I reversed off my own driveway and turned my head to look, instead of turning my whole body the way I had been doing for years without noticing.

That is the honest version. Not a miracle. A Tuesday where my neck did not come up once.

8. The Guarantee Is the Only Reason I Tried It

Woman on a sofa with the Thera Pillow

I want to be straight about this, because it is the part that actually applies to you.

I did not believe the product page. After $864 of shelf, a company telling me their thing works means nothing. A refund policy is not a promise, it is a fact you can check.

Ninety nights is longer than any of the nine things lasted in my routine. If it had gone the same way, it would have gone back and cost me nothing but the walk to the post office.

I never used it. But it is the only reason I found out.

9. You Are Not Bad at This. You Were Aiming at the Wrong Place.

A woman at a fork in the road

If you have a closet like mine, you have probably drawn the same conclusion I did. That the problem is your discipline.

It is not. Every single thing I bought asked me to do something, every day, forever. Of course I stopped.

Path one. A tenth thing that needs you to keep it up, and the same closet in six months.

Path two. Fifteen minutes tonight, lying down, doing nothing. And ninety nights to find out whether you are the exception.
